What is Nmap?

Nmap (Network Mapper) is the industry-standard tool for network reconnaissance. It discovers hosts on a network, identifies open ports, detects running services and their versions, and can infer operating systems. Security teams use Nmap to audit their external attack surface, discover unexpected exposed services, and verify that firewall rules are working correctly. Nmap supports various scan types (TCP SYN, UDP, service detection) and is the foundation of most port monitoring solutions.
